Ben Roethlisberger: An Inspiration On and Off the Field

Those who keep up with NFL football no doubt knows of Ben Roethlisberger. Even those who are only peripherally aware of the sport likely find his name familiar. Football fans know that he made 54 touchdowns during his college career and threw for a record 4,041 yards. Driving his team to a 23-9 victory record, he even made it to the Big 33 All Star Game between Ohio and Pennsylvania. He didn’t just excel in football during his school days either but also made a name for himself as a shortstop in baseball and as a senior point guard in basketball.

Born in March of 1982 in Lima, Ohio, Ben Roethlisberger developed a passion for sports and competition early in life. It was this inner drive and determination that led to him being a first round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004. He was named a Rookie of the Year in 2005 by a unanimous vote, led the Steelers to four straight victories and subsequently to the Super Bowl. Ultimately the team won against the Seattle Seahawks, firmly establishing Roethlisberger as an iconic player. This was also only the beginning, as he would continue to achieve milestones as he played for the Steelers until 2021.

Ben Roethlisberger may have retired from professional football but that has not stopped him from making a difference in his community. Ben Roethlisberger’s philanthropic efforts include starting the foundation bearing his family’s name, which supports K-9 and service dogs and others in police and fire departments across the country, as well as providing support for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In 2021, Roethlisberger worked with Light of Life, a Pittsburgh-based rescue mission to provide meals to the unhoused of that city. He is also a major supporter of NeoLight, a maker of phototherapy equipment for newborn infants with jaundice. Visit this page for more information.
