Everyone says they like freedom of speech, but in many cases that only applies when people are telling them what they want to hear. The Colcom Foundation, an environmental group dedicated to pushing back against problems like overpopulation and ecological damage, believes wholeheartedly in the concept of freedom of speech. It is one of the core ideals of their founder Cordelia S. May. While she may no longer be with us, her memory and her beliefs live on through Colcom.

Colcom’s main funding comes from grants from foundations, corporations, and individuals and from donations by individuals. Colcom Foundation is a member of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and the Center for Democracy and Technology.

  1. Harvesting the Best Ideas

Humanity thrives on ideas but sadly many throughout history have been punished for sharing new ideas. The Colcom Foundation believes that when ideas are allowed to be shared freely, the best will rise to the top while the worst are debunked. This will allow humanity to press forward and address the threats that we face to our civilization and our species.

  1. Having an Equal Voice

Another driving principle behind Colcom’s love of free speech is their belief that everyone should have a voice and that all voices are equal. Things like sex, race, nationality, gender, and political affiliation don’t matter when it comes to sharing ideas and having a voice. Everyone deserves to be heard and everyone deserves to be treated with equal respect.

  1. The Pillar of Democracy

The Colcom Foundation sees democracy as a pillar of our civilization. If everyone has an equal voice, then they should also have an equal say in matters as well. No one’s vote should count more than anyone else’s and no one should have disproportionate political power. We’re all in this together when it comes to facing the threats that could end our civilization or species.

Freedom of Speech is a Human Right

Without freedom of speech, everything we have built as a species will crumble. If we are to truly solve problems like overpopulation and environmental disaster, we have to all work together and share our ideas. We all have a voice if we choose to use it.
