In 1980, Stephen Bittel was a second-year law student at the Miami University School of Law. While many would consider the rigors of earning a Juris Doctorate a full-time endeavor, Stephen Bittel decided to take a job on the side.
He would eventually graduate from law school and pass the bar, but it was that job in commercial real estate that shaped the course of the rest of his life. Bittel soon discovered he had a natural aptitude for the business – along with an unstoppable work ethic – and he was soon offered a commission compensation plan rather than a fixed salary.
In 1980, Stephen Bittel was ready to take the plunge into self-entrepreneurship. He established his own real estate firm. This would be TerraNovaCorp. What started out as a tiny operation is worth billions of dollars today.
TerraNovaCorp has been the exclusive agent for north of $5 billion in commercial real estate deals, often representing some of the most prestigious firms in the world.
Starting in 1980, TerraNovaCorp CEO Stephen Bittel decided to focus on the development of shopping center projects, taking advantage of suburban markets on the rise and displaying robust growth.
Under Bittel’s leadership, TerraNovaCorp achieved a property base of more than eight million square feet. The firm handled more than 100 open-air shopping centers spanning three decades of activity. The firm also took on projects for industrial parks, office buildings and the burgeoning self-storage sector.
Bittel is proud of his deep Florida roots. He was born in Miami. His only stint outside of the Sunshine State was attending college in Brunswick, Maine, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at the academically challenging Bowdoin College. He graduated in 1978 and returned to Florida for law school.
