Polk’s career includes senior leadership positions at Kraft, Unilever, and Newell Brands. He describes leading a public conglomerate as work centered on delegation, where a CEO focuses on allocating resources to support the company’s broader plan while leading largely through other people. Shareholder engagement consumed a major share of his time too, with Polk estimating he spent close to thirty percent of his schedule with investors and public markets, all while managing the pressures of quarterly financial reporting.
Getting Closer to the Ground Floor
That changed in 2019, when Michael Polk came out of retirement to lead Implus, a private equity backed company. The new role put him much closer to daily operations. He now works directly with the marketing and commercial teams, helping design selling systems and go-to-market programs, calling it a return to work he loved doing two decades earlier. He also notes that his current team, while hungry and competitive, tends to be younger and less experienced, requiring him to model the behaviors he wants to see rather than simply delegate them.
Private ownership, Polk says, offers a different kind of freedom. Without the constant scrutiny of quarterly results, owners can focus on the long term health of the business, giving leadership space to make bolder moves.
Still, Polk insists a few leadership qualities never go out of style. Accessibility, authenticity, and sharp decision making define success at any company, he says.
