Michael Polk Transformed Newell Rubbermaid’s Business

Michael Polk took over as president and chief executive officer of Newell Rubbermaid in 2011, inheriting a company built through decades of acquisitions with net sales of $5.4 billion. By the time he retired in 2019, that figure had grown to $9.4 billion, an increase driven largely by a deliberate overhaul of how the company operated.

Polk and his team completed 35 transactions during his eight years as chief executive, split nearly evenly between acquisitions and divestitures. Rather than simply adding brands, the goal was to reshape the entire portfolio so the business connected more directly with consumers.

Reshaping A Sprawling Portfolio

That reshaping went beyond individual brands. Michael Polk restructured Newell from a United States holding company overseeing a diverse set of assets into a global consumer goods operating company, a structural change that touched nearly every part of the organization. He also reduced overhead costs by de-layering the firm and removing hierarchies that had built up over years of acquisitions.

The company’s digital presence changed just as much as its structure. E-commerce grew from 9 percent of global business to over 20 percent under Michael Polk’s leadership, reflecting a broader push to modernize how Newell reached its customers. He has credited much of this progress to changes made to the company’s leadership team, changes he says supported the wider goals of the transformation.

Michael Polk Newell Brands has said he felt fortunate to earn the respect and support of Newell’s board through each phase of the transformation. The company met or exceeded its external guidance in 30 of 32 quarters during his tenure as chief executive, a track record that helped validate the new operating model to shareholders. When he retired from Newell Brands in the summer of 2019, he left behind a company that looked structurally different from the one he had joined eight years earlier, clear evidence of how far reaching his transformation efforts had been.
