Judd Zebersky Left Law Behind to Build a Toy Empire

Before Judd Zebersky became one of the most consequential figures in the global toy industry, he was a practicing attorney. He earned a JD from the University of Miami School of Law, passed the bar, and launched his own firm. But the law never fully held his attention. In 1997, he walked away from his practice, told his wife he wanted to make toys, and booked a flight to China.

From Factory Floors to Fortune

What followed was less a business plan than an education. Zebersky spent months inside Chinese manufacturing facilities, studying injection molding, blow molding, and rotocasting with no prior experience in production. He visited factories along remote rural roads, learning firsthand how toys were engineered, designed, and assembled. “I went to remote places in China on dirt roads where entire families get around on a single motorcycle,” he recalled in a 2014 interview with Miami Law. That hands-on apprenticeship shaped not just how Jazwares built its products, but how it hired and trained staff for years afterward.

The company Judd Zebersky founded grew steadily through licensed entertainment properties, securing deals tied to Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Fortnite. When Jazwares acquired Kellytoy in 2020, it gained Squishmallows, a line of ultrasoft plush collectibles that would become a cultural phenomenon. The toys attracted celebrity fans including Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian, went viral on TikTok, and transformed Jazwares into a billion-dollar brand recognized across more than 100 countries.

Philanthropic Roots

Judd Zebersky made community investment a founding principle at Jazwares, not an afterthought. Through Jazwares Cares, the company donated millions of toys and forged partnerships with Make-A-Wish, Toys for Tots, and Ronald McDonald House. The Judd Zeberskys personally contributed $2 million to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. On March 20, 2026, Zebersky stepped down as CEO, closing a nearly 30-year run at the company he built from nothing. Refer to this article, for related information.
