1) The art of filmmaking takes a long, and one must be prepared well:
O’Rourke says that the art of filmmaking is a long journey and one must be prepared for it. It’s not a sprint but a marathon. He says that the good thing about filmmaking is that you get to explore your ideas and creativity.
2) One must be able to control the financiers or make sure anyone interested does not get in the way:
O’Rourke claims that doing an independent film means less money and more people around you who are looking to get paid. He says it is challenging to say no to everyone, but if you want your vision to come true, you need to do so. If financiers come, do not let them interfere with your work. He also says to be ready for the financiers asking for unforeseen changes and keep the original idea in mind.
3) Never doubt what you know but have room for learning new things:
O’Rourke says that every artist is different, and new filmmakers coming out in the industry will have something unique to offer. He says that if you start with a great script and shoot it, then there’s no point in doubting yourself or your work. Also, learn new things and be open to new challenges.
4) Never compare your success to those around you:
O’Rourke says that every filmmaker has their journey; they also have something more to offer than you. He says not to focus on the films other people are making but instead on your movie. He claims that in this world, there will always be someone who will do better than you and does it worse.
5) The process of experimenting is there and will always be there so as learning:
O’Rourke adds that if you’re going to have a bad day or every once in a while, you’ll make a good film, but as long as you keep experimenting and learning, it will never get boring. One can always be confident in their work. He says that acting can be a very long process, and the film is sometimes about more than just the acting.
