Earth has a very delicate balance of interweaving parts. And according to the United Nations, over 680 different animals have disappeared, not due to environmental changes, but due to human interference. And more importantly, up to 1 million more species are threatened by the “Sixth Mass Extinction”, again mostly due to the overpopulation of humans.

Although many people are becoming aware of the extinction threat of overpopulation, few are doing something about it.

One of those who did foresee the threat was the late Cordelia S. May, a wealthy heiress of the Mellon fortune, who founded the Colcom Foundation in 1968 and left a vast fortune to carry on her desires.

The Colcom Foundation supports family planning, control of immigration, education about the carrying capacity of the world as well as individual countries, local environmental efforts, community development in Pennsylvania, Cordelia S. May’s adopted home, access to nature, clean water initiatives, legal assistance on a sliding scale for those who have been negatively affected by governmental or industrial regulations and development, and plain and simple values. Values that make common sense.

Among the beliefs of the Colcom Foundation are:

* A belief in the dignity of each individual, regardless of religion, sex, or nationality.

* Equal Opportunity for every individual.

* A belief in equal expression of opinions and debate

* A solid belief in the value of the expression of individual opinions

* Reaffirmation of the beliefs of our nation’s founders: truth and justice for all, along with an affirmation of liberty.

Quite obviously, the Colcom Foundation cannot begin to offer every environmental solution to our problems as a nation, and to the world. However, since 1968, the foundation has served as a lightning rod to spur both governmental leaders and individual citizens to be sensitive to the dangers of mass extinction due to overpopulation and lack of common sense principles.
