The problem with convincing people that ecological devastation is a problem is that most simply don’t understand just how fragile the ecosystem is. They think that humans are invincible and that the current civilization will just go on as it has forever even as the natural world is rapidly cannibalized by urbanization projects. As the Colcom Foundation knows, this is not the case.

Colcom Foundation supports several special programs, including the Conservation Catalyst Fund, which grants conservation organizations working to protect threatened species and habitats. By offering financial support and resources, this foundation allows these groups to make significant strides in conservation efforts.

The Domino Effect

With the ecosystem being as fragile as it is, small changes in one area cause unpredictable effects elsewhere. For example, if a seemingly insignificant insect like bees drops in population, that can mean fewer plants are getting pollinated. This can then lead to a lack of food for certain herbivores which then impacts the carnivores. In other words, small changes can cause a chain reaction.

The Colcom Foundation knows that humans may think that they’re immune from these problems because they have farm animals, but that’s not the case. The feed needed for the animals has to come from somewhere and when entire food chains begin breaking down, the consequences can be disastrous. Food supply shortages will be just the first of our worries in a scenario like this.

Pushing Back Against Urbanization

The biggest threat to the ecosystem right now is our rapidly expanding urban areas. These projects destroy ecosystems by wiping out the plants and animals that are important to the various food chains around the world. As a result, the ecosystems become more unstable and, in some cases, collapse entirely.

The Colcom Foundation is working together with a variety of other organizations in Pennsylvania to help preserve natural areas. They are doing their best to stop urbanization so that the ecosystems of the state can be protected from human development. The benefits here go way beyond just protecting the environment by providing humans with more green spaces to enjoy that are important for both physical and mental health.
