Shelton Haynes is the CEO and president of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation. The organization was created in 1984 by the state of New York with the goal to operate and back the island. The island stretches across 2 miles with parks, roads, facilities, sports facilities, public transport, and the iconic buildings found on the island. Their president, Haynes, studied at Hampton University, earning a B.A. in sociology and has been the CEO since March of 2021. Roosevelt Island sits between Queens and Manhattan and is seen as a touristy spot for those who want to see history or those wanting a getaway from the bustling city. Many people depend on the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation with 12,000 people. Some of the iconic sites people can go to see includes the Four Freedoms Park, asylum, prisons, and the smallpox hospital. CEO Shelton Haynes has been credited for the corporation’s success with improvements he brought through a $150 million capital project improvement program. Some of the things they added include a bike path, additional parks, and renovations. Shelton Haynes and company have even added fun activities such as pickleball this year. The CEO and president made it a mission to bring this to the island due to popular demand from tourists and the like. The court was built right behind the Sportspark Complex. Haynes and the like believe this will improve and help the community. The team plans to add more facilities and make more additions on the island throughout the year. Shelton Haynes has placed diversity, inclusion, and equity as vital during his tenure on the island. Some of the ways he added diversity was through hiring women and people of color to the executive team. He expanded and added new roles to fit the mold.
