Music Industry Veteran Margie Hauser on Collaboration and the Creative Process

Margie Hauser is a music industry veteran, and she’s been at the forefront of the music scene since the 1990s. Her first taste was working with Tom Petty, where she served as A&R Consultant for his first four albums. Her accomplishments include working on projects for legendary musicians such as Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton.

Margie Hauser was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. She graduated from Arizona State University and studied filmmaking. Margie’s first job in the music industry was at KZZP guitar radio, a market-leading radio station in Phoenix, AZ. In 1990 she moved to Los Angeles and worked as an intern for Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers. That’s when she met her first rock legend: Tom Petty. In 1992 Hauser started working for Petty, serving as an A&R consultant on his first four albums (Into the Great Wide Open, Wildflowers, Full Moon Fever, and Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough)).

After working with Tom Petty, Margie Hauser worked at Decca Music Group as an A&R director. Her projects at Decca included working with Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and David Hasselhoff. She then moved to BMG, where she produced several albums by well-known musicians, including the late George Harrison’s album Brainwashed. Margie was most recently an executive producer for the Drive-By Truckers’ 11th studio album American Band (2017).

To be successful, Margie Hauser said that she must collaborate with other people. “When you’re an independent person doing your project, there’s no room for collaboration. You have to rely on yourself and be very disciplined and strategic in moving forward. Collaboration is just something that comes naturally to me because I like to work with people,” she said.
