A partnership between the Brazilian government and BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) would see the government announce concessions in the sanitation industry. In an interview, President of Trata Brasil, Edison Carlos, pinpointed that the concessions would improve basic sanitation through improvement of structural, administration and resource areas. During the interview, Felipe Montoro, an infrastructure expert questioned the aspect of decreasing wastes.
According to Edison, 90 percent of the sanitation sector is controlled by the public sector with the government serving over 70 percent of the population. In his thoughts, allowing private investors in the industry would improve service delivery. The partnership will enable BNDES to develop action plans for the states it serves. The customized plans will be laid down according to the situation in each state. The private sector will bring in resources while the government would bring in experience to complement the two levels of management.
The issue of water wastage being the biggest problem in the sanitation sector was also highlighted. Edison stated that it is only through public and private sector collaboration that the wastage can be mitigated. Infrastructure expert, Felipe Montoro Jens suggested that the issue of costs should be considered before the deal is agreed. Edison further urged governors to consider the benefits of the concession deal while making their decisions.
